Kirkland is where West Island families go for more room without leaving the island: quiet crescents, big lots, and a settled, family-first calm between Highways 40 and 20. I'm based just west in Vaudreuil-Dorion, so this is home turf. Here's the honest read on living here, and on buying or selling in it.
Life in Kirkland
Kirkland grew up as a planned suburb, so instead of a downtown you get neighbourhood after neighbourhood of single-family homes on wide, curving streets with some of the most generous lots on the island. Streets end in cul-de-sacs, kids still play out front, and people describe it as safe without having to think about it.
Day to day runs through the parks and sport: the sports complex, the pool, local soccer and hockey, the library. It's a strongly anglophone, bilingual community where families put down roots and often watch their kids settle nearby. That continuity is a big part of why people move here and stay.
The homes, and the market
This is single-family territory: mostly detached homes from the 1960s on, many expanded or renovated, on the big lots the area is known for, with some townhomes and condos for less upkeep. If you want space, a garage and a real backyard, it's one of the best spots on the island for it.

How's the commute downtown?
Good, and improving. Highways 40 and 20 by car, plus the REM light rail adds a station serving Kirkland for a fast train option downtown. Trudeau airport is close too.
